_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The need for the ASCP 1. There are currently no common standards of practice in smoking cessation. This has fostered a climate in which unprofessional practices can and do routinely occur. The ASCP therefore aims to set standards for ethical practice in smoking cessation. 2. With the marketing power of the pharmaceutical giants and the backing of health services worldwide, the drug-based approaches (NRT patches etc, Buproprion/Zyban and now Varenicline/Champix) have all but eclipsed many other excellent smoking cessation aids and methods. The ASCP therefore aims to provide a voice for drug-free smoking cessation aids and methods.3. Many stop smoking organisations, charities and web sites are heavily funded by (if not set up by) the drug companies. Many others promote a particular method or product and so there is very little unbiased information available. The ASCP therefore aims to provide unbiased information about ALL smoking cessation aids and methods. 4. Successful smoking cessation therapy requires specialist knowledge. Whilst most Hypnotherapists and Acupuncturists (for instance) routinely offer smoking cessation therapy, few have specialist training in this area. The ASCP therefore aims to hold a register of specialist practitioners. 5. Good smoking cessation training for therapists is hard to come by. The ASCP therefore aims to provide therapists with access to good smoking cessation training.
How we intend to achieve our aims: 1. To set standards for ethical practice in smoking cessation we will: - Define a standard measurement for success - Identify good and bad practice criteria 2. To provide a voice for drug-free smoking cessation aids and methods we will: - On our website, publish articles about drug-free smoking cessation - Provide a web chat room - Provide advertising space 3. To provide unbiased information about ALL smoking cessation aids and methods we will: - Hold a library of information on our web site - Provide links to other relevant articles and sites 4. Hold a register of specialist practitioners - We will provide an online database of smoking cessation specialists 5. To provide therapists with access to smoking cessation training we will: - Offer ASCP specialist training - Publicise non ASCP smoking cessation training
